The Day I Burned My Ships — What I Built From The Ashes — and Why You Should Care

Real AI Search Strategist. Real Small Business Owners. Real World.

Scott Mader's Maders ChemDry business the day he fired his Vivial marketing rep — the founding moment of The AI General.

That Was October 2009

My Vivial rep loaded his briefcase into his red Ford Focus and sped away. He actually laughed at me on the way out. Said I’d regret cancelling every yellow page ad and digital listing they’d been selling me.

I’d spent over $50,000 with companies like that. Two years of “develop your branding” and “just be patient” and “your name will be out there.” My name was out there all right — right next to every one of my competitors in the same cookie-cutter directory listing they were all paying for too.

That morning I made a decision. No retreating. No looking back. Hernán Cortés burned his ships so his men couldn’t return to Spain even if they wanted to. I fired my Vivial rep and burned mine.

I severed the lifeline. I was scared, alone and had no idea at that moment how I was going to generate my own leads.

That fear lasted about 10 minutes. Then I put my boots on and got to work.

What I built from the ashes is the reason you’re reading this page.

What I Built From the Ashes

Ten months after I fired Vivial, my cleaning company had doubled. Three trucks became six. I went from chasing market share to owning it in my Cincinnati territory.

I didn’t do it with a big budget. I did it with Google Ads, SEO, and a website I actually controlled. Tools I’d taught myself while the Yellow Pages reps were still laughing at me from their Ford Focuses.

By 2011 I was the top local marketing consultant in my franchise system. The Small Business Development Center and local Chamber of Commerce were sending me plumbers, painters, lawyers, and contractors who were fighting the same battle I’d just won. I helped them fire their Vivial reps too.

From 2010 to 2017 I built a national reputation helping individual franchisees for brands like Marco’s Pizza, Planet Fitness, Buffalo Wings & Rings, and Skyline Chili develop their local markets. Coast to coast. Real businesses. Real budgets. Real results.

Every single one of them had the same story when I showed up. Vivial. Thryv. Hibu. Cookie-cutter websites. Revolving door account reps. Dashboards nobody understood. Billing that continued long after results had stopped.

In 2017 I stopped consulting and built Mader Marketing — a full service digital marketing agency with one founding principle: small businesses deserve the same dedicated strategic partnership that Fortune 500 companies take for granted.

Thirty-two clients later, the battlefield changed again.

The Day My Wife Changed Everything

In the spring of 2022, my wife and I wanted to build a deck. So, I did what every homeowner does — grabbed my phone and searched “deck builders near me.” I got the usual laundry list. Paid Google Ads. SEO results. Reviews to sort through.

I made a list of six contractors to call. Three never showed for the appointment. Two were significantly late. The sixth showed up on time, gave me a quote, and was so expensive and so rude about it that I showed him the door.

My wife looked at me and said something that stopped me cold. “You spend all this time reading about Claude and ChatGPT. Why don’t you just ask AI directly what you’re looking for?”

So I did.

I built a detailed profile of exactly what I wanted in a deck builder — experience, price range, location, communication style — and asked AI to recommend someone. It came back with one name.

One.

I called that builder. We agreed on a contract. I now have a beautiful deck at roughly half the price of the rude guy’s quote. I hung up the phone and sat there for a minute. Then I called every client I had and told them we needed to talk.

I had been doing them a disservice. I was optimizing them for Google while their customers were increasingly asking AI for recommendations — and getting a very short, very specific list back. If you weren’t on that list, you didn’t exist.

That was the beginning of The AI General.

The Results Came Fast.

I got Buckeye State Awnings in Columbus, Ohio visible in relevant ChatGPT and Gemini searches within 8 days of building their website.

This system got BGM Wind & Shade Systems in Bradenton, Florida appearing in AI search results before their website was even published.

That last one still gets a reaction when I mention it at speaking engagements. Which is exactly what happened when SunPro Corporate — one of the largest home improvement networks in the country — saw what I’d done for their Florida dealers and invited me to their Bradenton training facility to teach their entire dealer network what AI search optimization actually looks like in the real world.
